January 2024

This class is for beginner and intermediate film photography students. This class covers camera operations, chemical film processing, darkroom printing, and the foundational artistic principles of visual storytelling. Students are encouraged to work on an artistic theme throughout the course, culminating in two final prints that work as a series. Youth will use a variety of cameras, manual and automatic, and more advanced technical skills are introduced, depending on the student level.

The picture (photo 1) reminds me of an album cover, and music is a huge thing my life, from throwing out all sorts of emotions to me. You’ll always catch me listening to music because it can make me feel calm, happy, confident, sad, and excited.

This quarter I took a risk and started working with medium format. I used an older camera that gave me quite a hard time. It was fully manual and had no light meter, which helps me figure out how dark or light my photos are. It took me all quarter to get a roll of photos that aren't blurry or poorly exposed. I also struggled a lot with my creativity over the quarter. I felt uninspired and had a hard time finding things to take photos of.

‍

My final ended up being a photo of Betty and Sam I accidentally double exposed. You can tell especially on Sam's face, he turns into the trees.

‍

I'm not particularly proud of this image but considering everything else I took I believe it's one of the better ones.

‍

My self portrait is just a mirror selfie in my room with the camera I was using.

My name is Betty, I’m 17 years old, and this is my 4th class with youth in focus. My goal was to take soft, focused, portraits of things that aren’t people; I love nature a lot and I especially love the up close details. This self portrait was taken by accident, but I like how you can see the posters on my wall.

Memory Machine

This picture is of a diorama of a dinosaur at the Pacific Science Center. I was able to manipulate the image in the darkroom to add the borders of the film  itself, since after I took the photo, I noticed that it looked like a still from an old Black and White 1950s Sci-Fi film. I really love how it turned out, Movies and film are a passion of mine, so I’m happy I was able to bring that into my photograph.

This is a portrait of my friend Azura (photo 1) printed on top of an inverted image of some trees. This was a multi step process where I made an original print of the trees, once that print is done and dry I exposed it over a blank piece of paper, this will then make the image inverted. Before developing I marked the top of the paper to make the trees intentionally upside down and then exposed the portrait onto the paper.

This quarter I continued to focus on photographing the punk community within seattle. I shot both bands and attendees at multiple hardcore shows across Seattle, and have learned I prefer shooting behind the scenes, and focusing on the community, rather than the bands themselves.

‍

This specific image is of someone in the venue bathroom being pierced, this event caused me to meet a bunch of new friends as I documented the experience.
